Want to play a sequel to your favorite Capcom game? Well, you better hope it sells 2 million copies first.

Speaking with Famitsu (via EventHubs), Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono explained how the company takes sales into consideration in terms of sequels. "For instance, if a game doesn't sell over 2 million copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel," Ono said. "All that means is that we weren't capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title."

On that note, Ono said that based on the sales of Darkstalkers Resurrection, fans shouldn't expect another Darkstalkers game "anytime soon."

According to Capcom's website, some games that have yet to reach the 2 million units sold mark as of June 30 include DmC: Devil May Cry, Dead Rising 3 (though this is before the game was released on PC), and Dragon's Dogma.

Fuck you, Capcom.

I ain't sign up for that
Capcom doesn't get it. Their operating budget is in the red because they have made it their business to troll their fanbases instead of give them what they want. They've burned gamers with Ultra Hyper Super Duper Over 9000 Ultimate Editions, and sell DLC that is already on disc. They repeatedly shit on Megaman fans and shoot themselves in the foot with exclusives. Every quarter it is the same old song from them about focusing on selling more and more DLC in their quarterly/half reports. They continue to make fighting games with 1/3rd of the cast being broken to god tier degrees.

All of their new games don't meet their expectations in the sales department because they are so focused on trying to design the games to make their overpriced DLC appealing. This trend will continue as they leave games behind and start new ones and Capcom will dig themselves an even deeper hole. Hopefully they have the savvy to sell the IPs instead of sit on them to try to sue a company for 'infringement' later.

Dead Rising 3 wont get a sequel any time soon because their PC port was absolute trash. The game should not be having frame rate dips in cut-scenes, especially if they are going to lock the frame rate. That being said, I can understand why a struggling company wouldn't want to make a sequel if a game sells under a certain amount. They have limited resources and it'd be a gamble to make a sequel on a franchise that couldn't or barely turned a profit.

Think about it in smaller terms, Would you invest $1,000 into stocks that only turned a $50 profit last time you invested in them?

Fair play to them. If they aren't making enough money to justify a sequel, it makes sense not to head down that road. What'll inevitably happen is all their major franchises will eventually burn out (sell less than 2 million), and they'll be forced to make new IPs, or fade away with them.

Yes, it's a shame that many of us won't see sequels to some of our favourite Capcom franchises (forever missing you, Dino Crisis), but I don't hold a grudge to a company for not making sequels to games that don't sell well. It'd say it's common sense.

Not only that but, if I recall correctly, recently Capcom have allowed for companies to buy them out. It's pretty obvious at this stage that Capcom aren't the financially stable company they once were, and as such, it's especially understandable that they wouldn't want to take on risky sequels.

These updates are what made Capcom famous in the first place, but what they don't get is if you do it repeatively, on a yearly basis... you end up losing. For example, Marvel Vs Capcom 3 was released, and not even 3 months later, we found out MVC3 got an update via UMVC3. UMVC3 had the lowest sales of any one of the MVC titles released. Activision did the same thing with Diablo 3 by releasing the "Ultimate Evil Edition." The difference is, Activision can afford to do that. The DLC problem isn't much of a problem per se, because other companies are doing it, the difference between Capcom and those other companies is that they try to do it in a way that benefits the gamer. Don't sell me a game with content locked and available on the actual disc before selling me incoming DLC in the same 3 month launch window. Because I will get the feeling I'm being ripped off, Capcom!

Mega Man is the biggest problem that Capcom has. Trolling your fanbase until everyone has had enough of your bullshit... The writing was on the wall long before Capcom continued to give Mega Man fans the shaft.
