Ubisoft Boss Wants PS3 Pricecuts. Already.

July 2nd, 2006 by Armin Siljkovic

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot openly speaks about Sony's pricing
strategy, saying (what we're all saying pretty much) - It's too
expensive and therefore won't sell enough. According to Guillemot,
the PS3 price must "drop rapidly" in 2007 if they want to compete
with Microsoft's Xbox360. He dropped the words in an interview with
Bloomberg, who are estimatng that Sony will sell 40 million PS3's by
2008, while Sony is counting on selling 100 million in the PS3 lifespan
(5-6 years).

break the ps3 down into three seperate componets,
dvd player, cd player, video game console.
right now, where can you buy those three componets considering the for
under $500?
grant you, the most expensive would be the blu-ray dvd player.

It's actually 7 components.

PS1, PS2, PS3, Blu-ray, DVD, CD, Linux Box

thats not the point though.

most people will want one for games and will simply look at it as a
games machine.

therefore they will see a £400 or whatever price tag and think "fuck
me, thats expensive"

yup, the games have gone back to the silly prices of the
megadrive/snes era it would seem.

hopefully the PS3 release will see MS see sense and sony forced into
following suit.

i wouldn't be surprised if we saw Wii games launching at a mx price of
£30-35 anyway.

It almost feels like this whole 'HD' revolution is just a huge
cash-in. Like being forced to go digital at our own expense if I want
to play games in the future I'll have to buy a hulking expensive bit
of kit and a new telly or a much better computer, then a mortgage for
each disc.

tbf, the TV's are getting cheaper, and the feeds on HD are shockingly
detailed in comparison to SD (when done right fo course)

but like you say, it's similar to the digital revolution in the 80's
with the introduction of the CD, and the upcoming analogue tv
switch-off.

to be honest, analogue TV has been around for decades and the tech has
become seriously dated.

it was going to happen sooner or later that there'd be a system-wide
upgrade needed, it's just the nature of the beast.

Interesting. This is probably why Assasin Creed is coming to 360.

Funny thing is, I can already play HD games in my xbox with the HD
cable I got. This whole 'new generation' is just a marketing ploy (at
least from M$oft) to get you to buy a new console. In fact, not only
did the life cicle of the xbox was too short, it was almost cut
entirely when the 360 came. At least in the case of PS3 the HD part is
indeed a new thing.

I just hope the price cuts from Sony come soon enough, I know I'm not
ditching $500 for the 'cheap' version (which is the one I'm getting).
That'll also give it some time so that when I go an get one, there are
already some used games to get without paying $60-$70 for them.

HD on the original xbox? i know it supported 480p in some games, but
that's not true HD. unless the xbox did support 720p, which i am
almost sure it didn't.

after all, the 360 upscales original games played using the backwards
compatibility if the console is in HD mode, surely if the games
supported 720p already, this wouldn't be necessary?

i doubt i'll get one at launch, i just haven't seen a single thing for
it that makes me actually want it.

It did.

Well, most XBox games didn't support 720p. Only a small number
did.

Actually it supported up to 1080i and I played at least one game on
that resolution with my Xbox. So that's why I say this whole 'HD new
generation console' is just a marketing ploy from M$oft. There may not
have been many HD games, but it was the game companies not making them
because the market wasn't there yet, not the console lacking the
capability.

Maybe you are thinking of the PS2, which supported 480p in many games, but
never 720p.

Several Xbox games support 720p (and one, Dragon's Lair, even supports
1080i). You can find a complete list at HDTVArcade's Web site:

I don't want a BLUE RAY PLAYER, I WANT A GAME MACHINE.

Imagine if Microsoft forced everyone to buy a copy of Windows Vista and
Office with each 360 because they wanted it to be a home PC too. Everyone
would be calling them the evilist and dumbest company on the planet.

They don't HAVE to force us to buy a blue ray player, they just are because
they want the royalty on the format for the next whatever years.

It's just a dumb strategy when the machine can't do much more than the 360
can in the first 2 years.

My prediction is that the first price drop will consist of discontinuing
the low end unit and lowering the price of the high end unit by $100.

Well a PS2 or Xbox are way less than that, even a 360 is and they
do everything you listed.

Plus, do you really want to buy Ultraviolet in Blu-ray, DO YOU?
